Low cost inkjet printing from Epson

Epson Australia has announced two ‘semi-professional’ photo printer/scanners – the $999 EcoTank Expression Premium ET-7750 (A3) and the $799 ET-7700 (A4) – with a five-colour ink system and ‘up to two years worth of ink’.

The EcoTank system allows users to refill the printers’ tanks. Should be more of it, we say!

Epson has done away with throwaway cartridges in these new printers. They feature printing with easy-to-fill ink tanks and ‘auto-stop’ ink bottles, with each colour uniquely keyed to avoid filling mistakes.

The up-front purchase cost of the printers is relatively high, but the total cost of ownership (TCO) over the long run will be lower, as users aren’t being slugged exorbitant amounts for replacement cartridges holding miniscule volumes of ink. Epson claims there is sufficient ink to print 14,000 documents in black or 9000 in colour (although there is no data on how many full-colour photographs this equates to). The press release states the printers will create a 4×6-inch borderless photo in 27 seconds, which would extrapolate out to an A4 in something under 2 minutes – so not superfast.

‘Not to overstate things, but the feedback we’ve had from the market is that these two new printers are real game changers,’ said Bruce Bealby, general manager, Consumer Division Sales and Marketing, Epson Australia. ‘Now like never before serious home, small office and semi-pro photographers have the freedom to print thousands of high quality photos and documents hassle-free for one upfront price – something they have never had before. It‘s safe to say the world of photo printing has now officially changed for the better.’ (Actually, Bruce, you probably have overstated things a tad, but no matter…)

Replacement ink bottles are $29.99 RRP for the 140ml black ink and $22.99 each for the 70ml Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.

Both printers feature USB and card slots as well as WiFi connectivity. The printers come with two sets of replacement ink bottles.

Users can also edit their photos with an autofix function and red-eye removal, and use the dedicated CD/DVD tray for direct printing onto those media.

The Expression ET-7750 (pictured below) and ET-7700 support the latest wireless standard, 802.11n and include Wi-Fi Direct.
The printers have built in Ethernet which makes sharing them on any network simple and straightforward and users can easily print from direct their tablet or smartphone. Support for Mac, Android and Windows computers and devices is comprehensive.

The new printers also allow PC-free scanning (1200 x 2400 dpi) and copying in colour or black-and-white.

They are backed by a two-year Return-to-Base warranty (one year standard and one bonus year upon registration).
