Seagate swells HDD drive capacities

Seagate Technology has upped the capacities of its IronWolf and BarraCuda Pro internal hard drives from 10TB to 12TB, to meet demands for increased media storage.

The company’s 12TB drives come in a 3.5-inch form factor, and are designed to store 4K resolution video files, as well as 360-degree videos. They also support augmented and virtual reality.

While flash-memory based SSDs seem set to eventually replace spinning disk HDDs, the ability of drive manufacturers to lower the price and up the capacity and performance of their products is making them a fast-moving target.

The 12TB BarraCuda Pro HDD is Seagate’s fastest, highest-capacity and most reliable hard drive for desktop computing.

It is designed to optimise transfer speeds for data-intensive activities like large file transfers and photo editing.

The new 12TB drives also support Seagate’s leading IronWolf Health Management (IHM) software.

Designed to operate on enabled Synology DiskStation NAS, Asustor NAS, and QNAP NAS, populated with Seagate IronWolf or IronWolf Pro drives, IHM improves the overall system reliability by displaying actionable prevention, intervention or recovery options for the user. It will be available within the next quarter with NAS partners.
