Dowling, who calls photography a part-time job – he’s an engineer and project manager by trade – has won the AIPP WA Epson Professional Photography Awards for the second consecutive year.

Dowling, Landscape category winner, said that for him photography is more about personal expression and exploration than it is about taking a ‘beautiful’ image.

‘I have been taking photos as long as I can remember, as most people have. It was back in the mid 2000’s when I decided to start thinking more about what I was capturing,’ he said. ‘Firstly, I delved deep into the art of landscape photography, then combining my passion for landscapes and travel I’ve branched out into both genres.’

Dowling captured his award-winning photos in Canada.

‘Being in the field with a camera in my hand is a bit like fishing in the remote rivers and lakes of Canada, it doesn’t matter if I catch – capture – anything,’ he said. ‘Often just standing, or walking through a location and enjoying the surrounds is just as, or more rewarding than taking a great shot. By taking this approach I am able to see beyond the landscape and instead feel it, helping to create unique and striking images.’

The AIPP WA Epson State Awards were presented in Perth at an awards presentation dinner. Almost 100 entrants submitted a collective of 453 of images to be judged.

The awards were anonymously peer-judged over the course of two days by Australian photographers including Mandarine Montgomery, Craig Wetjen, Adam Finch and Kaye Davis.
