Teo, who also won the portrait category, was educated as a classical musician and switched to photography later in life.

‘My love for the art is always developing,’ he says. ‘My greatest skills are in getting the best out of people, making them feel comfortable and relaxed in front of my camera so they can truly be themselves.’

More than 100 Victorian professional photographers gathered in Melbourne for the AIPP VIC Epson Professional Photography Awards presented at The Apartment on Little Bourke Street.

The national president of the AIPP, Vittorio Natoli, says the awards represent the best of professional photography in Australia.

‘The AIPP VIC Epson Professional Photography Awards are a celebration of photographic excellence and represent the pinnacle of professional photography,’ he said.

To be eligible for the title of Professional Photographer of the Year in each state, photographers must first win a category.

After a category win a panel of experts further assess all category winners’ work to determine the overall state winner. Innovation, content, creativity, technical excellence and impact are the key criteria when the images are reassessed.

More than 190 entrants submitted a total of 885 of images.

This year, the awards were judged anonymously by recognised Australian photographers including Hilary Wardhaugh, David Evans and Greg Hocking.

The state awards also act as a stepping stone to the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPAs), the country’s largest national awards for professional print photography. State Awards entrants must receive 80 points and above for at least two of their images to be eligible for the APPAs.
