Microsoft’s Surface Studio targets creatives

Microsoft has announced its futuristic Surface Studio, a PC and graphics tablet boasting the ‘world’s thinnest LCD monitor’. How thin? Well that would be just 12.5mm.

It has an Ultra-HD 4.5K (4500 x 3000) resolution screen, which amounts to 13.5 million pixels – roughly 63 percent more than a 4K TV.

The 28-inch 3:2 display is a fairly modest 192 PPI but boasts an expanded colour gamut to DCI-P3, which is 25 percent larger than sRGB. This delivers the ‘deepest reds, truest blues and vibrant greens’. Microsoft is calling it ‘TrueColor’.

There are three different Surface Studios which will be available from 2017, ranging from US$2999 to US$4199.

It is powered by either an Intel 6th gen Quad core i5/i7 processor with 8, 16, or 32GB RAM. It comes with a 1TB or 2TB drive, and a GeForce GTX 965M 2GG or GTX 980M 4GB graphics card.

It has four USB 3.0 drives, an SD card slot and Ethernet cable input, as well as Wireless and Bluetooth capabilities.

The Studio Surface is Microsoft’s attempt to appeal to the creative industry and challenge the dominance of Apple iMac ‘in this space’, as the marketing suits say.

Microsoft has announced that initially two programs apps, Paint 3D and Sketchable, will be supported.
